Hip Arthroscopy / Arthroscopic Surgery

Minimally invasive hip arthroscopy, which treats hip impingement and cartilage damage in young adults, is a modern surgical technique that prevents osteoarthritis and is performed by a coordinated surgical team.

Arthroscopic surgery is a surgical technique that enables the diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic conditions affecting the joint area using minimally invasive surgical techniques. In arthroscopic surgery—a term meaning “looking inside the joint”—a lighted camera system (fiber-optic device) is inserted into the joint, allowing for examination of the affected area, diagnosis of the condition, and the performance of various therapeutic procedures during the same session. The history of arthroscopic procedures for the hip joint is relatively more recent compared to those for the knee and shoulder joints. However, it is rapidly gaining ground, particularly in the treatment of conditions causing hip pain in young adults.

Hip arthroscopy is currently actively used to treat conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement—a pathology that causes hip pain in young, active adults and can lead to osteoarthritis in later years if left untreated—as well as damage to the articular cartilage and labrum. All orthopedic surgical procedures require a team-based approach and coordination. Here, you can see the details of a procedure we performed on a patient undergoing hip arthroscopy, carried out in collaboration with the hospital operating room team and my esteemed colleagues, Dr. Barış Kadıoğlu (@barkadi) and Dr. Levent Taşkıyan (@leventtasyikan).
