1 – What Are Cookies and Other Similar Technologies?
A cookie is a small text file stored on your computer or mobile device via your browser when you visit a website. Cookies enable a website to operate more efficiently and allow for the presentation of personalized pages to provide a visit experience that is better tailored to your personal needs and faster. Cookies contain only information related to your browsing history on the internet and do not collect any information about files stored on your computer or mobile device.
In addition, there are certain technologies used for purposes similar to cookies (“Cookie-Like Technologies”), as listed below.
- Pixel tags (transparent graphic images placed on a website that indicate when a page has been viewed),
- Mobile device identifiers (storage of information regarding the use of a mobile device in third-party environments via IDFA, advertising ID, etc.),
- Segmentation/Reporting Products (programs or products that operate through pre-built code added to websites or mobile devices via various methods and, through this code, report on, interpret, or store users’ activities on the website or mobile device)
The term “cookie” as used in this text shall be understood to include Cookie-Like Technologies as well.
2 – Types of Cookies and Their Purposes
2.1 – Cookies by Expiration Period:
Session Cookies: Session cookies are temporary cookies used while visitors are on the website and are deleted once the browser is closed. The primary purpose of using these cookies is to ensure the website functions properly during your visit. For example, these cookies make it possible for you to fill out online forms consisting of multiple pages.
Persistent Cookies: Persistent cookies are used to enhance the website’s functionality and provide a faster and better service. These cookies are used to remember visitors’ preferences and are stored on visitors’ devices via their browsers. Certain types of persistent cookies may be used to provide personalized recommendations to visitors, taking into account factors such as the purpose of their website usage. Thanks to persistent cookies, when a website is revisited using the same device, the system checks whether a cookie created by the website exists on the visitor’s device; if so, it is determined that the website has been visited before, and the content to be presented to visitors is determined accordingly. Cookie-like technologies also fall under this category.
2.2 – Cookies by Source:
First-party cookies: These are placed directly on visitors’ devices by the website. First-party cookies are set by the website you are visiting and can only be read by that site.
Third-party cookies: Third-party cookies are set by other organizations that provide various services. For example, the external data analytics services we use and the providers offering these services set cookies on our behalf to report what is popular and what is not.
2.3 – Cookies by Purpose:
- Essential Cookies: Essential cookies are necessary for you to browse our website and use its features, such as accessing secure areas (logging in, filling out forms, and remembering privacy preferences). These cookies are used for purposes such as security and authentication; they are not used for any marketing purposes and do not identify you. An example of this is remembering your previous actions when you return to a page within the same session.
- Functionality cookies: Functionality cookies allow our website to remember choices you’ve made in the past (such as your username, region, or language) to provide a more personalized online experience. The information collected by these cookies may include sensitive data that could identify you, such as your username or profile picture. Not allowing the use of these types of cookies may prevent you from using a specific feature and prevent the website from remembering your preferences.
- Performance cookies: These cookies help us understand how visitors interact with our website by collecting information such as how you use our website, which pages you visit, and which links you click. These cookies are used to improve the site. Website owners use them to estimate the number of unique visitors, identify the most important search engine keywords leading to a web page, or track navigation patterns on the website. These cookies do not identify you personally. All data is collected and aggregated anonymously.
- Marketing cookies: These cookies are used to present content that is relevant to you and your interests. They may also be used to deliver targeted ads or to limit the number of times an ad is shown to you. Many types of these cookies can collect personally identifiable information by tracking consumers.
